President Johnson endorses Trump for president in 2024
Former President Donald Trump received an endorsement from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Tuesday, extending a streak of good relations between the two Republicans.
Johnson declared his support for Trump during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” when pressed by co-host Joe Kernen, who noted that the speaker is widely known as a “Trump ally” but had not publicly endorsed any candidate in particularly in the 2024 elections. The race for the White House, as far as he knew.
“I have endorsed it unconditionally,” Johnson responded.

“Look, I was one of the closest allies President Trump had in Congress,” the speaker added. “He had a phenomenal first term. Those first two years, as everyone knows, we achieved the highest economic figures in the history of the world, not just the country, because his policies worked and I totally agree with President Trump.”

Johnson, a constitutional lawyer-became a politician, joined Trump impeachment defense team and helped in the effort of challenge the results of the 2020 election. Although Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) initially earned Trump’s endorsement in the presidential race after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was removed from office last month, the former president motivated members to support Johnson when it became clear that he was the “main candidate”. Johnson won the gavel in a vote of 220 to 209, with the Republican conference supporting him.
Trump is running again for a second term after losing to President Joe Biden in 2020. National polls show Trump as the clear favorite in a large but shrinking Republican field, as polls examine a hypothetical general election rematch against Biden they have been closer.
Other top GOP candidates still in the race for president include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Governor and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, the tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, and former Arkansas Governor. Asa Hutchinson. Among the candidates who dropped out were former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Tim Scott (R-SC).
“I hope he’s our candidate,” Johnson said of Trump on Tuesday. “Yes. And he will win it and we have to make Biden a one-term president.”
