2024 Election

Rising Democratic star urges Manchin not to ‘spoil his legacy’ with Biden challenge

A rising star of the Democratic Party on Sunday implored Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) not to challenge President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who has become a superior substitute for Biden’s re-election effort, sent the warning shot after Manchin announced last week that he would not seek re-election to the Senate in 2024 and kept open the possibility of running for the White House amid speculation that he could be recruited by No Labels. a group that is considering a “unity” presidential bid for attract moderate voters.

“My message to Joe Manchin is: I thank you for your service. I think he has had a career year of distinguished service, as governor,” Moore said during an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

After co-host Jonathan Karl pointed out that Manchin had 42 years of public service under his belt, Moore continued: “That’s right, both as governor and senator. I urge you not to spoil his legacy by getting involved in something so foolish.”

When Karl pressed Moore to explain his stance, Moore added: “Because if you look at what No Labels is, No Labels literally has no plan, no path, no political platform. “They don’t even have a candidate.”

Other candidates, beyond the Republican primaries, are campaigning for a chance at the presidency. They include Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and left-wing activist Cornel West, who are running as independents, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Karl asked Moore if third-party candidates could garner enough support to ensure a victory for former President Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner.

“No. Because I think what President Biden will continue to demonstrate is that results do matter. You know, it’s one thing to say we’re going to criticize the system and another thing to actually work to improve the systems. And that’s what I think President Biden has continued to demonstrate,” Moore said.

He added later: “I think all the other things will sound like noise, while President Biden’s results will really seem like what they are: a real, productive boost for the people of this country.”
