Noem’s confirmation hearing delayed

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Governor Kristi Noem will have to sit in the waiting room a bit longer for her Senate confirmation hearing.

Governor Noem’s confirmation hearing before the Homeland Security & Governmental affairs committee is now slated for Friday morning. The committee says the hearing was delayed, as the FBI still needed to complete paperwork. Background checks are standard for cabinet picks and paperwork hangups have been blamed for other nominees having their hearings delayed.

Noem took tough aim at border security as she spoke about her nomination during her likely final State of the State address in Pierre.

“The situation at our southern border is nothing short of an invasion. And over the last four years, America’s border security has been purposely weakened and ignored,” Noem said.

Noem used the same speech to highlight her action on the border as Governor.

“We’ve deployed our South Dakota National Guard to our southern border eight times, and that includes five state deployments to support Texas’s work to stop the flow of illegal aliens,” Noem added.

On Capitol Hill, Noem will face questions from a panel of eight Republicans and seven Democrats. Senator Mike Rounds, R-S.D., says he thinks Noem will perform well.

“Any time you have individuals coming through, that have not been through a confirmation hearing before, they’re always going to give them questions, and so what you want to do is to try to be ready for the questions in advance. We’ve talked to Kristi about that already, and I know she’s done her homework, so I think she’ll be just fine,” Rounds explained.
