Long Island dog owner jumps into chest-high mud to save his pup — but needs his own rescue
He had that sinking feeling.
A Long Island dog owner found himself sinking into chest-high mud while attempting to save his dog at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown last week.
The Medford man, 24, chased after his dog into a vast stretch of mud on Thursday that was left behind from the recently drained Stump Pond, according to News 12.
He became trapped in the thick mud after trying to pick up the pup, who had wandered into the drained pond, according to police.
“There’s a lot of hazards that are involved in thick mud that you can find yourself in,” Don Dongvort, the assistant chief of the Smithtown Fire Department told the outlet.
Police, aided by a helicopter, were able to locate the man. And Smithtown fire rescue crews and two police officers were able to pull him out of the mud.
Following the dramatic save, the man was placed in a police car to prevent hypothermia, the outlet reported.
He received treatment from Smithtown EMS and was released.
