2024 Election

Hunter Biden Links The ‘Future Of Democracy’ To His Sobriety

Hunter Biden suggested his fight to remain sober is intertwined with the 2024 election and keeping former President Donald Trump out of the White House.

The first son spoke to Axios about his struggles with addiction, particularly cocaine and alcohol, and how he “often” thinks about the “profound consequences of failure” if he were to relapse.

“Maybe it’s the ultimate test for a recovering addict — I don’t know,” Biden said, according to a report published on Monday. “I have always been in awe of people who have stayed clean and sober through tragedies and obstacles few people ever face. They are my heroes, my inspiration.”

He also said, “I have something much bigger than even myself at stake. We are in the middle of a fight for the future of democracy.”

As his father, President Joe Biden, runs for re-election with a similar message about saving democracy, Hunter Biden faces a pair of federal indictments. The younger Biden has pleaded not guilty to gun and tax charges but remains very much in the spotlight — including with appearances at the White House.

In a court hearing in July of last year, Hunter Biden said he has not been under the influence of any drug or alcohol since June of 2019. And, according to a judge and his lawyers, Hunter Biden has tested negative for drugs and alcohol in the intervening months.

But drugs recently snagged headlines as the Department of Justice unveiled images of “apparent” cocaine and paraphernalia, after which Hunter Biden’s lawyers argued prosecutors confused “lines of sawdust” for cocaine in one photo.

Axios reported that Hunter Biden said his first responsibility to himself and his family is to “make it through” his “fight clean and sober, and I feel a responsibility to everyone struggling through their own recovery to succeed.”

On Wednesday, Hunter Biden is expected to appear for a deposition with congressional investigators to discuss his foreign business dealings that are under scrutiny in a GOP-led House impeachment inquiry against his father, the president, over concerns about corruption.
