David Axelrod, a former adviser to President Barack Obama, openly mused Sunday about whether President Joe Biden should run for a second term in 2024.
A series of posts on X de Axelrod offered an analysis of the political situation in response to the publication of the results of a New York Times poll that showed former President Donald Trump leading Biden in five out of six key states on the battlefield.
“It’s too late to change horses; Many things will happen in the next year that no one can predict, and Biden’s team says his resolve to run is firm. he is challenged [conventional wisdom] before, but this will send tremors of doubt through the party: not ‘bed-wetting,’ but legitimate concern,” Axelrod wrote.

“The biggest concern is that his biggest responsibility is the one thing he can’t change,” Axelrod added. “Among all the unpredictables there is one thing that is certain: the arrow of age only points in one direction.”

Some of Biden’s followers and others have called him consider leaving office amid low approval numbers, unfavorable polls in a hypothetical rematch against Trump in 2020 and fears about his fitness to continue serving as commander in chief. Biden, already the oldest person to be president at 80, would be 86 at the end of a second term. His tendency to lose his train of thought while speaking and moments caught on camera in which he stumbled or fell have raised concerns about his ability to lead effectively.
Axelrod was a top strategist for Obama’s two winning presidential campaigns and as an advisor in the Obama White House in which Biden served as vice president. Despite their shared history, Axelrod has consistently expressed his concern for Biden’s age becomes a political liability. Axelrod was at it again Sunday, even as he promoted the current president’s work.
“He [president] he is rightly proud of his achievements. Trump is a dangerous and unhinged demagogue whose blatant disregard for rules, norms, laws and institutions [of] democracy should be disqualifying. But what is at stake here is a miscalculation too dramatic to ignore,” Axelrod said in his X thread.
“Only [Biden] “We can make this decision,” he added. “If he continues to run, he will be the Democratic Party candidate. What you need to decide is whether that is wise; Is it best for HIM or for the country?
