The Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court, just slammed the door on noncitizen voting — and progressives’ years-long drive to blur the differences between citizen and non-citizen, indeed between citizen and illegal immigrant.
Across the country, the left has pushed such illegal voting with the insane claim that not letting noncitizens vote is somehow anti-democratic.
It’s of a piece with the progressive view that it’s somehow evil to control our own borders, and the left’s general contempt for anything approaching patriotism — and of course they figure it’d help them win elections.
Thus, Democrats in Virginia and Ohio objected last year when the states purged hundreds of noncitizens from voter rolls, treating it as some kind of right-wing voter suppression.
Happily, though progs have pushed New York’s Court of Appeals well to the left, the jurists can still read: “Whatever the future may bring, the New York Constitution as it stands today draws a firm line restricting voting to citizens,” explained Chief Judge Rowan Wilson in his majority opinion.
The court’s 6-1 decision struck down the City Council’s 2021 law to allow 800,000 noncitizens with green cards to vote in city elections — a measure that won the votes of current mayoral hopefuls Adrienne Adams and Brad Lander, as well as both Democratic comptroller candidates, Mark Levine and Justin Brannan.
Wilson, though impeccably left-of-center, mocked the council’s reading of the state Constitution, saying it “would allow municipalities to enact legislation letting anyone vote, including 13-year-old children.”
Thursday’s decisive ruling should also shut down efforts to use last year’s voter-approved Prop 1 to open up statewide noncitizen voting, though some far-left group will no doubt still try.
Fact is, the far left will never give up on this nonsense unless and until it comes to think that noncitizen voting will give Republicans an edge.
Citizenship should come with some privileges, and we should encourage legal immigrants to become citizens of this great nation.
That’s why voting is so coveted, so important, and not something to be treated so dismissively.
