Trump flatters ‘rich as hell’ donors at Mar-a-Lago fundraiser, promises to give them tax cuts

Former President Donald Trump courted his donors at Mar-a-Lago last week, asking them to offer their financial support to a fellow Republican and promising to cut their taxes if he was re-elected in 2024.

In a video of his Thursday speech posted to Facebook by an aide, Trump is seen alongside North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson as the former president encourages his “rich as hell” donors to back Robinson’s bid for win the governorship next year.

“I just want to thank everyone. Anything you can do to help Mark and [his wife] Yolanda wins these elections. And she has a tough opponent, not a good opponent, but a tough opponent, a political person,” Trump told the crowd of some of his biggest supporters.

“But you have to help them financially because you are all people who have a lot of money! I know 20 of you and you are incredibly rich! she added, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Trump then praised Robinson and said Republicans should “appreciate him” because he is “a star.” Robinson, who became North Carolina’s lieutenant governor in 2021, is running against four other Republicans for the party’s nomination. Democrats have controlled the governor’s mansion in the Tar Heel State since 2017 after Gov. Roy Cooper defeated Republican Pat McCrory in the 2016 election.

“I hope they can support him, write checks for him and do everything. And then we’re going to close the border. “We’re going to give them tax cuts, we’re going to pay off our debt,” Trump said. “We’re going to do all the things we have to do.”

Under Trump’s policies as president, corporate tax rates were chopped up from 35% to 21%. Trump also cut taxes for Americans in almost every income category, but the former president’s tax cuts are aimed at expire in 2025. As the Republican front-runner, Trump has emphasized the economy during his election campaign, a top issue for voters across the country.

“Was it better five years ago or is it better today?” Triumph asked the crowd at his rally in New Hampshire on Saturday. “Nothing has improved with corrupt Joe Biden.”
