South Dakota Sen. John Thune will transfer $4 million to the National Republican Senatorial Committee from his campaign account, his office confirmed Tuesday.
The transfer is the largest ever made to the committee, and it comes as Republicans hope to win a Senate majority in November’s election. The NRSC is the Republican committee charged with assisting GOP Senate campaigns. The Democratic Party has a similar committee.
“The NRSC is incredibly grateful for Sen. Thune’s contribution to help us take back the Senate Majority,” committee spokesman Mike Berg said in an email to The Dakota Scout. Berg confirmed that the transfer is the largest in committee history.
The transfer comes as Thune, who is not up for election this year, has traveled the country campaigning on behalf of Republican leaders. Thune is also running to be the party’s next Senate leader. The GOP caucus will select a new leader following November’s election after Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, the longest serving Senate leader in history, steps away from the position. Thune is currently the number-two ranking Republican behind McConnell.
