Are you tired of your favorite TV show being delayed in airing? Or maybe you’re always the one who abandons conference calls due to a bad connection?
Slow Internet service is often related to “the army of devices hogging your Wi-Fi,” as tech expert Kim Komando says. recently explained to daily mail.
But a setting on your router can give a single device or several preferential “VIP treatment” over the others.
Called quality of service (QoS), it is a setting that allows users to prioritize Internet bandwidth when they see fit.
Komando, who is also a Post columnist, presented a real-life scenario for how QoS could be assigned.
“If you want to prioritize your smart TV for all your favorite shows, it will request internet speed drops before a Windows update takes place,” he wrote.
“That doesn’t mean Windows Update will freeze completely. It will still work, but at a much slower rate, along with all the other devices that didn’t get the VIP treatment.”
Better routers mean better options for using QoS, according to Komando, adding that while it may improve speeds, the trick doesn’t work miracles.
“The Quality of Service feature won’t miraculously make every device on your network incredibly fast. It still depends on the initial speed of your internet package,” he continued. “Think of QoS as an additional layer of optimization.”
This is how Komando recommends enabling QoS on routers from major brands.
Google Nest
- Use your phone to open the Google Home app
- Tap favorites and then Wi-Fi
- Select the devices to prioritize, for how long and press save
- Tap Wi-Fi, then settings and go to preferred activities to set priorities for things like video conferencing.
TP-Link Routers
- Connect to your router using a computer
- In a web browser, open tplinkwifi.net
- Click Advanced and then QoS
- Go to device priority
- Set the total bandwidth for your Internet and press save
- Click Return to Advanced and QoS to set the application priority.
- Choose app priority
- Configure bandwidth, save, and choose options like gaming or streaming for speed priority

- Sign in routerlogin.com
- Click Advanced, then QoS Settings and configure the QoS rule.
- Choose add priority rule
- Choose a category like games or apps
- Customize the category and set priority levels
- Press apply

- Connect to router via computer
- Go online to the global web address http://192.168.1.1
- Click on apps and games and then on QoS
- Select enabled in the Internet access policy priority field
- Change Upstream Bandwidth to Manual
- Add bandwidth value
- Use the drop down arrow to choose the appropriate category
- Name the priority device and enter the MAC address
- Create a priority level and press Apply
