SUV fatally strikes cyclist before crashing into parked vehicle in NYC

A cyclist was fatally struck by an out-of-control SUV that barreled into a parked vehicle just seconds later on a Brooklyn street Sunday morning, according to police.

The driver of the black Volkswagen SUV was heading northbound on Union Avenue near Lynch Street in Williamsburg when he collided with a 46-year-old man riding a bike in the same direction at around 11:30 a.m., authorities said.

After the driver, a 40-year-old man, hit the cyclist, he then plowed into an unoccupied white Honda Odyssey that was parked on the side of the road, police said.

The cyclist was rushed to Kings County Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The operator of the Volkswagen was also taken to the same hospital in stable condition.

Video obtained by the Williamsburg News shows a black SUV zooming into the white SUV right before the screech of brakes can be heard. The black vehicle pushed the white one at least a couple hundred feet before both came to a stop, the footage from the outlet shows.

So far, no arrests have been made as the probe is ongoing by the NYPD’s highway collision investigation division, cops said.

City Councilman Lincoln Restler called the latest cyclist fatality “tragic” as he called for safer streets in the Big Apple.

“We’ll keep pushing for safer streets on every block,” Restler, a Democrat, said in a tweet.

“More cyclists died in NYC last year than 25 yrs. These deaths are preventable w/ network of protected lanes.”
