Shooting near Rutgers University sends two to the hospital

An early morning shooting just blocks away from student housing at Rutgers University left two people affiliated with the school injured on Friday.

The shooting occurred just after 2 a.m. at the intersection of Easton Avenue and Hamilton Street in New Brunswick, NJ following an apparent altercation, Rutgers police announced.

Upon arrival, police found a male victim “affiliated with Rutgers University” with gunshot wounds and transported him to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, RLS Media reports.

Eyewitnesses at the scene claim the unidentified victim got into a verbal altercation with a suspect when the suspect approached the victim in his car.

The victim allegedly provoked the suspect to shoot, at which point the unidentified gunman fired multiple shots and fled the scene, according to RLS Media.

A woman who lived nearby, who police say is also “affiliated” with the university, was then struck by a stray bullet.

Both victims are now being treated for their wounds at the university hospital, police said.

It is unclear what their conditions are or whether they were students or faculty at the school.

They said the “description of the perpetrator(s) is limited at this time” and are asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
