OpenAI brings back Sam Altman as CEO and establishes new board of directors

Sam Altman will return to OpenAI as CEO after the board removed him from the role last Friday, the company announced early Wednesday.

A new board has also been established consisting of Bret Taylor (chairman), Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo.

D’Angelo is the only member who was on the previous board who decided to leave Altman.

“We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board consisting of Bret Taylor (chairman), Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo. We are collaborating to discover the details. Thank you very much for his patience during this.” OpenAI wrote in X.

Altman, who was hired by Microsoft on Sunday night, said he is “looking forward to returning to OpenAI.”

“I love openai and everything I have done in the last few days has been to keep this team and its mission together. When I decided to join MSFT on Sunday afternoon, it was clear that this was the best path for me and the team. “With the new board and w satya’s support, I look forward to returning to openai and building on our strong partnership with msft.” Altman wrote in X.

OpenAI was in crisis following Altman’s firing, as nearly all of the company’s approximately 770 employees signed a letter threatening to join Altman at Microsoft unless he was reinstated and the board resigned.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
