NYC school bus carrying special-needs students struck by gunfire: sources

A mini school bus carrying students with special needs was hit by gunfire — including one bullet that smashed through a window — on a Bronx street Friday afternoon, sending the youngsters ducking for cover, according to law enforcement sources.

At least two gunshots struck the bus as it traveled with eight students between the ages of 5 and 9 near East 165th Street and Trinity Avenue in the Forest Houses neighborhood around 2:20 p.m., law enforcement sources said.

Six bullets were fired, with one piercing a bus window and at least another striking the side of the vehicle, sources said.

No injuries were reported.

Sources said at least one shooter pulled the trigger, and there is no indication the bus was the intended target.

Police are investigating if the shooting was tied to gang activity, with at least four teenagers fleeing the scene, sources said.

A man told ABC 7 that a bus monitor said there appeared to be a beef between two groups as the bus drove by.

“The attendant says she was on the bus and two groups were shooting at each other, so she pushed two kids down on the floor and she got on top of the kids,” the man told the station.

“And she said bullets were flying through the bus.”

A coworker of the bus driver said the driver kept traveling through the hail of bullets until he knew the vehicle was out of harm’s way.
