McDonald’s thrills snow bunnies with world’s only ‘ski-thru’ window: ‘It’s very special’
It’s a hot spot in a cold climate.
The world’s only McDonalds with a “ski-thru” window has become this winter’s destination du jour for snow bunnies who spotted the restaurant in viral videos on social media.
McSki, located in Sälen, Sweden, first opened to the public back in 1996, but has been inundated with fast food lovers from across the planet in recent months.
“This season has been extraordinary because there are so many people from other countries here, so many from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands,” McSki’s supervisor, Aron Johannes, told The Telegraph, attributing some of the buzz to TikTok.
“What’s interesting this year, in particular, is that there’s been an 80 per cent increase in English visitors,” Linda Morell, head of public relations at SkiStar, which owns the McDonald’s building, noted.
“We’ve never had so many English guests,” she added, saying the weak Swedish krona was also fueling tourism. “It’s an all-time high.”
McSki, which sits on the slopes of the Lindvallen winter resort, allows customers to waltz up to a window with their skis and snowboards to order any item inside.
The restaurant boasts a full menu, in addition to a McCafe, where hot chocolate and warm Swedish cinnamon buns are beloved by patrons.
Customers can enjoy their order in the elements, with the restaurant boasting several outdoor tables.
Those seeking respite from the frigid conditions, however, can sit inside McSki, which resembles a cozy Aline lodge with its wood-paneled interior. There’s seating for 170 people, and the space can quickly fill up if blizzard-like conditions commence.
One TikTok video posted last December, which described McSki as “heaven,” has clocked up a whopping 6.6 million views and enticed a whole lot of viewers to add the restaurant to their travel plans.
In the clip, a female skier is seen gliding up to the ski window to take her order with a huge smile splashed across her face.
A second clip which has garnered more than 7 million views shows a snowboarder picking up a paper bag filled with McDonald’s treats from a grinning employee.
“It’s a very special McDonald’s,” Johannes told The Telegraph. “Everyone is happy, everyone is on vacation mode.”
