Long Island man indicted for role in robbery, stabbing of funeral home director
A Long Island man has been indicted for his part in allegedly robbing and stabbing the owner of an Amityville funeral home earlier this year, Suffolk County authorities announced Monday.
Jason Funderburke, 37, of Hempstead, allegedly threatened the unidentified undertaker as he returned to his business on Aug. 29, according to a statement from District Attorney Ray Tierney.
Funderburke and his accomplice flashed photos of the victim’s family as a threat before they began punching the business owner and demanding money, Tierney said.
At some point, the accomplice — who is still on the lam — also stabbed the victim, he said.
“This local business owner was allegedly targeted by the defendant and an unapprehended accomplice,” Tierney said. “The victim was not only targeted and stabbed, but his family was also allegedly targeted and threatened.”
“I urge anyone with information as to the accomplice to contact Crime Stoppers, the Suffolk County Police Department, or my office,” the district attorney continued.
Funderburke has been charged with first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree robbery and second-degree assault, Tierney said.
At his Monday arraignment, Funderburke was ordered held on $100,000 cash, $200,000 bond or $1 million partially secured bond, according to the DA’s office.
His next court date is Jan. 24, 2024.
John Halverson, Funderburke’s Long Island attorney, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
