Alvin Bragg’s latest banana-republic Trump stunt proves AGAIN that he must go
Alvin Bragg refuses to end his insane crusade against Donald Trump, even if it means creating yet more “law” to keep the cause alive.
In a Tuesday filing, he asks Judge Juan Merchan (another rabid partisan) to keep Trump’s guilty verdict intact while simply never sentencing him — and so robbing the defendant of any chance to appeal.
That is, the DA who goes all out to protect violent street thugs is happy to eviscerate the rights of his chosen targets, including the president-elect.
This is the latest in a series of equally unseemly ideas from Bragg, who has also requested that Merchan hold the threat of an eventual sentencing over Trump’s head for the entirety of his presidency.
Both tactics would deny Trump’s right to an appeal — something Bragg and Merchan both rightly fear.
Fear because the appellate courts are all too likely to toss the verdict, which was based on a series of “novel” legal theories.
Such as the nonsensical arguments they used to elevate a slate of expired business-records misdemeanors into a fake felony, including Merchan’s ruling that the jurors didn’t even have to agree on exactly which of three possible other “crimes” Trump supposedly committed to justify that elevation.
It’s pure Kafka — made more so by Bragg’s latest move, which he admits New York law doesn’t allow, “arguing” essentially that Merchan should do it anyway because Orange man bad.
In fact, the DA’s team is trying to shoehorn the idea in from an Alabama law meant to keep guilty verdicts in place if someone dies before the appeals process is completed.
That Merchan has allowed the case to linger for this long is an obscene breach of his duty, not least because it’s given Bragg space to work on banana-republic stunts like this.
The Manhattan DA is undermining democracy before the eyes of the city and the nation, and none of our brave defenders of the republic are making a peep.
(And all this is to say nothing about his unjust prosecution of Daniel Penny, now happily blown up by a sane jury.)
That Bragg is even now seeking new ways to bend the law to keep up his political witch hunt until the bitter end is yet more proof (though none was needed) that Gov. Kathy Hochul needs to remove him yesterday.
