Migrants wanted for slashing NYPD detective found hiding in Massachusetts basement

The illegal migrants wanted for slashing an off-duty NYPD detective during a botched robbery in the Bronx have been arrested while hiding in a basement in Massachusetts, police said Wednesday.

D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, both from the Dominican Republic, were found by the US Marshals Service hiding in a basement of a home in Lynn and taken into custody overnight, according to the NYPD.

They will be brought back to New York City to face attempted murder charges, the department said.

“When individuals commit violent, unprovoked acts against members of law enforcement, there is nowhere they can hide,” said United States Marshal Ricky J. Patel of how the task force “worked around the clock” to track them.

“We will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our police officers to hold violent offenders fully accountable.”

The duo, who had a history of arrests in the Big Apple, pulled up on Detective Jose Mercedes on an e-bike in broad daylight and tried to snatch the cop’s gold chain in the Bronx on Friday afternoon, according to authorities.

The detective fought back and was stabbed seven times with a knife by the violent muggers, who sped off and left the detective bleeding on the sidewalk, police said.

Mercedes, who is assigned to The Bronx’s 44th precinct, survived the vicious attack because the blade miraculously missed his vital organs, sources said.

He was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment and was released on Monday.

Authorities identified the attackers Tuesday as a massive manhunt was underway to find them.

The brazen robbers were caught on surveillance video near the scene of the crime, with the driver, Mejia, seen speeding down the sidewalk and Carabello, the suspected stabber, sitting shirtless behind him.

Both men entered the United States illegally during the Biden administration and had been arrested for various crimes in Gotham — but released because of soft-on-crime laws and the city’s sanctuary rules preventing local law-enforcement cooperation with ICE.

“Both of these suspects were released into the country by the Biden administration, and despite multiple prior arrests in New York, sanctuary politicians refused to cooperate with ICE and released them,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement.
