Officials comment on Yankton shooting

Yankton School District officials are speaking out on Thursday night’s shooting that left one injured during a wrestling meet.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley confirmed on Thursday night that an officer-involved shooting took place and the DCI is investigating the incident that left one injured. According to Jackley, no law enforcement officers were injured and there was no threat to the public.

According to Superintendent Dr. Wayne Kindle, law enforcement notified the school of a situation in the west parking lot of Yankton High School. An individual was reported for possibly having a weapon.

The facility was secured and those in the gym were relocated to the theater to provide a more safe and secure location.

Kindle went on to say “A very serious situation occurred between an individual and law enforcement in our parking lot.”

No threat was directly made to a student or staff member an none were injured.

Local law enforcement secured the area and the situation was isolated to the parking lot.

“As superintendent, I want to personally commend students, staff, community members and those attending from out of town for their cooperation throughout the evening. Our highest priority was the safety and wellbeing of those present,” said Kindle in a statement. “The decision was made to continue with school today given the situation last night was an isolated incident with no further safety concerns leading into today.”
