Protein Diet Coke, other mashups go viral in dirty soda trend

The latest sickly sweet soda concoction has the internet in a fizzy.

Thanks to the Hulu hit “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” beverages known as “dirty sodas,” revealed to be wildly popular in Utah, have gone global.

But the #MomTok drink — which involves adding flavored syrups and creamers into your pop of choice — has taken on a new form online as TikTokkers create their own mash-ups, using Diet Coke.

Protein Diet Coke,” for example, has become a major mover on the social media site — involving a hearty glass of the sugar-free drink combined with a protein shake.

The blend has been likened to an ice cream float — or “better” than one, to some with a sweet tooth — and has been called “genius” and received rave reviews of “an 11 out of 10.”

Critics, however, called it “disgusting” and “gross.”

“That is phenomenal,” Meredith Hayden, better known online as Wishbone Kitchen, said in a TikTok video while trying the drink, calling it “identical” to a root beer float.

Although, it’s probably a bit healthier than the popular dessert.

While health experts wouldn’t advise against the trendy bevvy, it’s worth noting that Diet Coke doesn’t add any nutritional value — consuming the drink is essentially the same as chugging the protein shake alone.

Registered sports dietitian Jessica Isaacs told Self that she “could see some pros” for trying the beverage, such as the nutritional boost of protein, electrolytes, calcium and carbohydrates.

“You take something like a Diet Coke that doesn’t really have any nutrition, and you’re increasing the nutrition of it, essentially,” she explained.

In an article for Today, registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo noted that the “Protein Diet Coke” concoction has about as many calories as a full sugar Coke, adding that it’s fine to drink “in moderation.”

“For people who like protein Diet Coke, I would suggest limiting it to a post-workout recovery drink to help with muscle building, or a snack to keep you full in between meals,” she wrote.

“Think of it as a protein drink with a splash of sugar-free soda for added flavor. But again, you could just drink the protein milk on its own.”

On Saturday, singer Dua Lipa even tried her hand at a DIY cola creation, taking to TikTok to boast her bizarre recipe.

The “Levitating” hitmaker was sitting at a restaurant when she added pickles, pickle juice, jalepeños and jalepeño juice to her plastic cup of Diet Coke.

While some viewers were apprehensive of the spicy yet bitter drink, others said they were “intrigued” to try and vowed to taste test the beverage later.

This isn’t the first time the pop star has introduced fans to strange food combinations.

The “Don’t Start Now” diva was part of a larger movement of foodies advocating for olive oil ice cream, a dessert that went viral earlier this year.
