2 teen swimmers go missing in waters off NYC’s Jacob Riis Park: cops
Two teenage boys at the beach with their parents went missing while swimming in the waters of Jacob Riis Park in Queens on Friday night, police said.
Divers with the FDNY and NYPD spent the last two hours of sunlight searching for the teens, who vanished shortly after lifeguards got off the clock, authorities said.
The 16- and 17-year-old boys took a dip in the ocean at Jacob Riis Park’s Bay 2 while their parents stayed on shore, according to the NYPD.
But they never returned from their swim and 911 calls reporting them missing were made around 6:35 p.m., cops said.Â
It’s not clear whether the boys are related, but sources said the pair did not have the same last name.
The NYPD’s Special Operations Aviation Unit, as well as the US Coast Guard, were also searching for the duo.
After a few hours, the FDNY removed its divers from the water and continued the search with fire boats.
Back on the beach, a man in handcuffs was hauled away by cops, photos show. It’s unclear why he was arrested.Â
Swimming hours under lifeguard supervision at the federal beach are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
