CENTERVILLE, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Attorney General has announced that 64-year-old Jay Ostrem of Centerville has been indicted on nine felony counts relating to the May deaths of three men.

Former Centerville Mayor charged in triple homicide
The victims, 26-year-old Paul Frankus, 21-year-old Zachary Frankus and 35-year-old Timothy Richmond were shot by Ostrem on May 27, 2024.

Ostrem’s charges, handed down by a Turner County Grand Jury, are three counts of First Degree Murder, three counts of Second Degree Murder and three counts of Felony First Degree Murder While In Commission of a Burglary.

Ostrem is shooter in 2 law enforcement incidents
South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, with the Attorney General’s office prosecuting.

Ostrem, a former police officer and a former Mayor of Centerville, is being held in the Minnehaha County Jail on a $1 million cash bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 20 at the McCook County Courthouse.
