Severe Weather Slams Region with Damaging Winds, Blizzard Conditions. 100 mph winds overnight in Rapid City

Severe breaking weather is impacting much of the region today, with extreme winds and winter weather creating dangerous conditions across western and northeastern South Dakota.

Wind gusts reaching up to 100 miles per hour have caused widespread damage in and around Rapid City, where thousands of residents are currently without power. Several communities across the West River area have reported wind speeds exceeding 80 mph since early this morning, prompting emergency responses and damage assessments.

Farther north and east, conditions have turned wintry, with snow and near-blizzard conditions developing throughout the day.

Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for many areas north of Sioux Falls, where strong winds combined with snow squalls are creating near whiteout conditions at times as the system moves through.

Due to the dangerous winds, the South Dakota Highway Patrol has suspended all oversized loads statewide for Thursday. Officials say travel conditions remain hazardous, especially in **northeastern South Dakota**, where authorities are advising against travel as snowfall continues to reduce visibility and make roads difficult—if not impossible—to navigate at times.

Wind gusts are expected to remain strong through the afternoon, with speeds between 50 and 60 mph across the area, and the potential for gusts exceeding 60 mph.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve tonight, as winds begin to diminish and the storm system moves out of the region. Residents are urged to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel, and use caution as cleanup efforts begin.
