Oglala Sioux Tribe opposing Mt. Rushmore fireworks and Trump’s visit to South Dakota

Oglala Sioux Tribe Demands Cancellation of Mount Rushmore July 4th Fireworks Over Wildfire Risks
The Oglala Sioux Tribe is formally opposing a planned July 4th fireworks display at Mount Rushmore, citing severe environmental risks to the Black Hills region.
In a newly issued resolution, the tribe is urging both the National Park Service and the National Forest Service to cancel the celebration. Tribal leaders point to current drought conditions and an elevated risk of wildfires as the primary drivers behind their opposition.
According to the resolution, a fireworks display under these conditions poses a direct threat to the lives and property of tourists, local residents, and tribal members alike. Furthermore, the tribe emphasized the urgent need to protect the Sacred Black Hills and its surrounding cultural sites from potential devastation.
The tribe is also opposing a potential presidential visit from President Donald Trump, who has been formally invited to the event.
“We urge the federal government to cancel any fireworks celebration at Mount Rushmore to safeguard the Sacred Black Hills, all sacred sites, and the lives of everyone in the community.” — Summary of the Oglala Sioux Tribe Resolution
