Mitchell businessman , Cory Cumings charged with child abuse

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The owner of Mitchell Roofing & Siding, Cory Cumings has a warrant out for his arrest after being charged with child abuse and two counts of possession of a firearm after a prior felony drug conviction.

The charges, filed Tuesday, come as Cumings is currently facing a separate federal case in U.S. District Court, where in 2023 a raid of Cuming’s home and business allegedly revealed drugs and hundreds of firearms, including a machine gun.

State law bars those convicted of a Class 5 felony drug offense from possessing firearms for at least five years after release from prison, probation, or parole.

The child abuse charges come after Cumings posted a video on Snapchat of him hunting with his son, a viewer then posted the video online. In the video Cumings can be heard yelling at his son to fire a shotgun, using profanity and at one point threatening to leave without his son.

Multiple viewers have shared that video with KELOLAND News.

According to court documents the child abuse charge comes from an incident on October 18.

Possession of a firearm by a person with a prior felony drug conviction is a Class 6 felony, with child abuse being a Class 4 felony.

According to court documents DCI Special Agent Brian Larson testified before a grand jury in regards to the indictment and as of October 28 has a warrant out for his arrest.

As of 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Cumings has not been arrested and no court date has been set for the child abuse and felony firearm possession.
