Inside Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Feud’ After American Idol

Idol gossip! As Carrie Underwood prepared to return to American Idol as a judge on March 9 — 20 years after winning the fourth season — rumors of a feud between her and the show’s other most famous alum exploded yet again.

“For years, fans have speculated that she and Kelly Clarkson don’t get along,” says a source, noting that the supposed war reignited when Carrie, 42, faced technical difficulties during her performance of “America the Beautiful” at the presidential inauguration in January and “everyone compared it to when Kelly sang” at the Obama inauguration in 2013.

Both women have downplayed the comparison in the past, with Kelly, 42, writing “we’re both winning in life and pretty blessed” in a 2018 X post, to which Carrie responded, “Whatever, girl, I voted for you!” before sharing her disappointment in the fact that successful women are often pitted against each other.

Kelly addressed the whispers yet again on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in 2023. “There’s no beef between us,” she insisted. “There’s nothing between us. We don’t even know each other well enough!”

The truth? “Aside from the obvious — they’re both moms and singers — they don’t really have much in common,” says a source. “They’ve just never really connected as friends.”
