Longtime ABC7 news anchor Harold Greene dies at 82

Beloved Los Angeles news anchor Harold Greene, who spent decades delivering breaking news to Southern California viewers, has died at 82.

The Emmy-winning broadcaster, who became a familiar face in LA households during nearly two decades at ABC7, passed away Tuesday night, his family announced.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Harold passed away last night. My mom and I were by his side, and there was an extraordinary amount of love in the room,” said the 82-year-old’s daughter, Courtney Greene.

“We have a feeling he’s already settling into the great newsroom in the sky, no doubt with a few suggestions on how things should be run. He was so very loved, and we know he will be missed by many,” she continued.

Greene began his journalism career as a producer and reporter for ABC7 in 1970 before working in San Diego and San Francisco, according to ABC7.

He then returned to the news station in 1982 where he anchored ABC’s 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts until 2000.

The legendary anchor also worked at KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV until his retirement in 2008.

During his career, Greene earned multiple Emmys, Golden Mike and Edward R. Murrow awards. He even received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

His wife did not reveal any other details regarding Greene’s death but called on people to celebrate his life by “sharing pictures and memories.” She also said that a memorial will be held after the holidays.

Just two years ago, another well-known anchor from Los Angeles named Chauncy Glover passed away.

The Three-time Emmy Award-winning news anchor, who worked for KCAL News, died at the age of 39 in November 2024.

While the cause of death was not revealed then, it was discovered that Glover died from acute intoxication in what was an accidental death.
